The 17 Best Motivational Sayings For Property Managers

We have been considering relocating our property management office and remodeling a suite that will better fit the needs of our office.  As a part of picking out the finishes (in order to be able to price everything out) I began to think of how to decorate the space.  One idea I had is to post some of my favorite sayings as wall art.  These sayings or quotes demonstrate the mindset I want everyone on my property management team to have.

1. Every problem is an opportunity for a creative solution.

Creativity can be key when we are facing an issue that is unusual or especially challenging.  As a property manager, we are often constrained by budgets and limited on time.  The ability to think "outside the box" is key to being successful in property management.

2. What you DO speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you SAY.

We've all heard the phrase "Talk is Cheap" and this saying really gets to the heart of that issue.  It is easy for us to tell tenants that we have everything under control and that their issues are important to us.  If we do not act the same way though, they quickly lose confidence in us.

3. Success doesn't come from what you do occasionally.  It comes from what you do consistently.

Being consistent can be a challenge when every day there is a different issue popping up for us to address.  Consistency is the key though in producing great results.  It is human nature to distrust those whose behavior you cannot predict.  By being consistent we set a standard that our tenants come to expect.

4. Success is never owned, it is rented.  And the rent is due every day.

This is one of my favorites.  In property management, the rent we pay is the effort we put in.  You cannot expect to be successful with inconsistent effort.

5. Go for the extra mile.  It's never crowded.

What that extra mile consists of can be different for every person or situation.  It could be as simple as calling someone after a work order is completed to ensure it was done to their satisfaction.

6. Don't tell people your plans.  Show them your results.

Again, "Talk is Cheap".  Our building owners and our managers want to see results.  If I am presenting a plan for approval, I've found that I have a lot more success if I can demonstrate how it will achieve results and how those results will be quantified.  Show them the bottom line.  When you do the financial analysis, sometimes you will see the idea you had may not be as good as you once thought.

7. When you can't control what's happening, challenge yourself to control the way you respond to what's happening.  That's where your power is.

Sometimes we have bad days.  Sometimes we have really bad days.  The only thing we can control when everything is going sideways is ourselves.

8. A diamond is a chunk of coal that did well under pressure.

How we react in stressful or difficult situations is what separates mediocre property managers from the great ones.  Be the diamond.

9. In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun - Mary Poppins

One of the most stressful and tedious times of the year in my office is during budget season.  Our budgets are fairly complicated with lots of checking and cross checking to make sure we've captured everything.  What I've found is it goes much more smoothly if we order in lunches, turn up the music and have a little fun.

10. Work like there is someone working twenty-four hours a day to take it away from you - Mark Cuban

In property management, there is always another property manager or building owner who would happily steal your tenants.

11. A bad attitude is like a flat tire, you can't get very far until you change it.

Have you had someone on your team who always predicts what they have been told to do will fail?  More often than not, they are right because they are not looking to succeed.  Attitude plays a huge role in property management.

12. Be kind to unkind people.  They need it the most.

You never know the full story of what someone else is going through.  Sometimes they are being unkind because factors out of their control are causing huge amounts of stress in their life.  As their property manager, be the one person who shows them there is still kindness in this world.

13. The difference between try and triumph is a little UMPH.

Sometimes the situation calls for a little elbow grease.  Never be too good to roll up your sleeves and get a little dirty to get the job done.

14. Good, Better, Best.  Never let it rest.  Until your good is better and your better is best.

Always be learning and trying to improve.  Your competition certainly is.

15. No matter the situation, never let your emotions overpower your intelligence.

It can be hard, but this is key to making smart decisions as a property manager.

16. Don't aspire to be the best on the team.  Aspire to be the best FOR the team.

Property Management is a team effort.  No one person can do it all themselves

17. Be somebody who makes everybody feel like a somebody.

Compassion is one of our core values.  Tenants can tell the difference between lip service and someone who truly cares.  Be one of the good ones who actually cares.
