7 Top Organizations for Property Managers

If you are a new property manager, you may have asked yourself, "What organizations should you join as a property manager?"

There are many different professional organizations that serve the property management community. The best one for you will vary based on the type of properties you are managing, your purpose for joining an organization, and your individual real estate market.  Not every organization has an active presence in all towns.

Some organizations are more general in nature, serving all property managers and owners. Others are specialized in areas such as industrial properties, retail property, etc.   Some of the larger groups are both general in nature but have smaller sub-groups to meet individual property types.

It is also important to consider what your purpose is in joining a professional organization. Is it to network with others in the industry to further your career goals? Is it to build a network of vendors so you can better service your properties? Is it for the education and reference materials available? Some organizations offer designations.   Or are you joining a group to get more clients and tenants for your business?  You may need to join more than one group to meet all of your needs.

It is also important to look at how a particular group is doing in your market.  Some organizations may be really strong in one area of the country but much smaller in another. Whether you should look are a small medium or large chapter will also depend on what you are looking to get out of the organization.  A smaller chapter could be great for building your resume qualifications but not as good if you are looking to make a lot of contacts.

The list below is far from all inclusive and is focused  mainly on the United States. Don't see your favorite organization on the list? Let me know in the comments.
